COMMUNITY HOPEFUL FOR MUDGEE THEATRE'S FUTURE, AS AUCTION LOOMS

The Mid Western Regional Council last week held a meeting to investigate whether or not it should buy the Regent Theatre.

It did not resolve to buy the historic building despite dozens of campaigners gathering to hear the council discuss the issue.

A motion to recognise its heritage value and to write to the State Government to encourage it to purchase the building was passed, rescinded and then debated in a closed meeting in which it was again passed.

The theatre has again been listed for auction after plans to redevelop the Art Deco building were knocked back by the council and the Land and Environment Court.

The Mid Western Regional Council's General Manager Brad Cam said that the restoration and running costs of the theatre were unclear.

"Council felt the first step we need to do is to speak to the State Government and see what the appetite is to purchase the building or provide us with grants, significant grants, and then that is something that council may consider in the future,” Mr Cam said.

The Mudgee district's National Trust Spokesman Bruce Wilson spoke at the council meeting last Friday.

He said the council had missed an opportunity.

“As a ratepayer I understand that Mid Western Regional Council's finances are finite,” Mr Wilson said.

“However, there is provision, I think, you only have to look at annual report to see that they could, probably should, purchase the building."

The building’s auction has been slated for March.
